I read the article authored by Dr. Lakshman Ranasinghe under the headline, Astrological predictions, in The Island of Friday the 17th instant with avid interest. So, with the kind assistance of the Editor I wish to share my personal experience with the readers of my ilk. In my letter under reference I explained that the eminent Consultant Gastroenterologist with boundless mercy and full of empathy and sympathy diagnosed my particular ailment as incurable diverticula disease. All the pathological tests were done at the Colombo National Hospital. He was not prepared to undertake them at Asiri Hospital which involved payment as I am a poor pensioner on a meagre monthly income. He lives up to his name "Meththananda" with an abundance of loving kindness. He prescribed some pills and capsules and my condition improved.
Days passed by. Due to circumstances beyond my control I had to shift from Panadura to my present humble abode at Matara. In the meantime certain pathological tests were ordered by Dr.Vajira Senaratne, Clinical and Interventional Cardiologist. A report indicated that my Creatine Kinase had risen up to 199.2 which indicated a kidney problem. Still another test has been ordered in due course. In addition, I was also taking some pills and capsules prescribed by Dr. S. Muhunthan, Consultant Respiratory Physician from Galle. He was away on overseas leave and I had no way of contacting him. On my own I stopped all pills and capsules other than those meant for my coronary artery disease prescribed by the eminent Cardiologist. Of course I continued with the Seretide Evohaler/Inhaler. Later the Consultant Respiratory Physician returned to the Island and I explained myself and he very kindly approved my course of action in suspending the medicine he had prescribed and ordered me to continue with the inhaler only.
A few months ago, may be five or six, a close elderly relative of mine requested me to try Aegle marmelos (beli) fruit. The same treatment quoted by Dr. Lakshman Ranasinghe. Every day after dinner I consume a ripe beli fruit. The bloating of my stomach ceased and my bowels are moving very well sans any strain. There is no constipation at all. This is the present position. I am only a humble layman with absolutely no clue about medication. Yet, this is my salutary personal experience which I decided to share with my aged compatriots with due deference to the Medical Consultants whom I adore and venerate.
May all beings be well and happy is my wish and prayer.
